Castelvetrano

What are the tasting notes?

Castelvetrano extra virgin olive oil boasts flavors like tomato leaf and fresh cut grass, making it a more intensely flavored oil. You’ll also find tasting notes of green banana, artichoke, and green almond.

What are the differences between Castelvetrano & ALIVE/AWAKE?

Our Awake, Alive, and Castelvetrano oils are all Extra Virgin Olive Oils, though each oil is made with different olives and have different flavor profiles and uses! Additionally, our Awake and Alive are both made in sunny California and Castelvetrano is made in Sicily, Italy!

Awake has a bold flavor and is made with early-harvest Arbequina olives. It’s designed for roasting, sauteing, soups, and stews.

Alive is more smooth and is made with Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koroneiki olives. It works well with salads, marinades, baked goods, and even drizzled on ice cream!

Castelvetrano is our most robust oil. It is made from Castelvetrano olives (also known as Nocellara del Belice) and is the perfect finishing touch to any dish. It works well with cheeses, focaccia, and on top of pasta!

How should I use Castelvetrano EVOO?

Castelvetrano can be enjoyed with focaccia, cheese, charcuterie, pasta and picnic-y bites.

This special olive oil is so flavorful it can even be used as a sauce — simply pour over a fresh pasta with salt.

Can I cook with Castelvetrano? Can it withstand high temperatures?

As with any high quality extra virgin olive oil, Castelvetrano can withstand high temperatures, however, the delicate and fruity tasting notes that come with a premium EVOO would be lost once heated. We recommend using this as a finishing or dipping oil!

Will this be added as a core item for Brightland?

Nope! Our Castelvetrano Extra Virgin Olive Oil is limited edition for the spring season, so be sure to get yours ASAP!

When was this harvested and when is it best by?

Our Castelvetrano Extra Virgin Olive Oil was harvested in October 2023, and is best by December 2025.

Why did Brightland choose an international oil when Brightland products are US made?

We always want the best of the best in products — no matter where it comes from. When we tried a sample of this gorgeous olive oil from a Sicilian family producer, we were blown away. We were also really delighted that the Castelvetrano olive’s origins are from Sicily, so going back to its original roots to re-introduce the oil felt very special.

Olive Oil

WHEN IS BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OIL BEST BY?

Brightland olive oil is guaranteed delicious for two years from the date of bottling. You can find the best by date printed on the bottle - just look for "BB: MM/DD/YYYY." If you don't see a best buy date, please contactgoodday@brightland.cofor assistance!

ARE BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OILS VEGAN?

All of Brightland’s olive oils are 100% plant-based, vegan, gluten free and cruelty-free.

IS BRIGHTLAND CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

Our farm partners are committed to sustainable practices. Due to the arduous and costly certification process, their small, family-run farms and mills are not certified organic. However, this is something we are working toward as Brightland grows.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY OIL?

All Brightland bottles are coated with UV-protectant matte coating, so you can keep your bottle on your kitchen counter or at your table and don’t have to hide it away in a cupboard! We highly recommend closing your olive oil when it is not in use.

I FEEL A SHARP, PEPPERY SENSATION AT THE BACK OF MY THROAT AFTER I SWALLOW THE BRIGHTLAND OIL - WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

A sharp, peppery sensation at the back of your throat is one of the best indications of a high polyphenol olive oil, which is the chemical compound most commonly known as an antioxidant. The polyphenols in olive oil that contribute to its pepperiness also prevent oxidation. These polyphenols are strong antioxidants and have been shown to provide a host of beneficial effects from healing sunburn to lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk of coronary disease. Additionally, oleocanthal, a natural polyphenolic anti-inflammatory agent uniquely found in extra virgin olive oil, functions much the same way that ibuprofen, an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) does. This receptor is located at the back of the throat, which is where the distinctive sting from high quality olive oil is felt. This unique sensation and the accompanying cough or clearing of the throat are regarded among connoisseurs as indicators of high quality olive oil.

MY OLIVE OIL TASTES BITTER. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Bitterness is actually a positive term in the authentic extra virgin olive oil world. A bitter taste indicates that the olives were harvested in the early Fall, making the oil bitter and grassy tasting.

WHERE IS BRIGHTLAND EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL PRODUCED?

100% USA made: Brightland olive oil comes from the golden state of California!

ARE THE WHITE BOTTLES RECYCLABLE?

The UV-protected, coated bottles are recyclable! They are environmentally friendly and virtually pollution-free. Unlike typical liquid paints, the UV-protected coating process doesn't use solvents and doesn't release organic compounds into the atmosphere. You can recycle our bottles with certainty that they are not damaging the environment.

You can also upcycle your bottles; some Brightland customers reuse their bottles with flowers, candles, branches and stems, as beautiful shelf art, and when storing leftover cocktails or aperitifs!

WHAT IS THE SMOKE POINT FOR BRIGHTLAND EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL?

Both Brightland extra virgin olive oils’ smoke points are 410 degrees at the time of harvest (November 2022).

There is a common misconception that extra virgin olive oil has a low smoke point - however, high quality extra virgin olive oil can have a smoke point up to 420 degrees, which is more than enough when cooking with EVOO.  One important thing to remember is that change will occur with time: all extra virgin olive oil begins to degrade, and so the smoke point will begin to lower gradually over time.

ARE BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OILS A COOKING OIL OR A FINISHING OIL?

Both! Brightland can be used when cooking or even when frying an egg because of its high smoke point. It also serves as a beautiful finishing oil because of its early harvest, green properties. Vinegar Details

HOW SHOULD BRIGHTLAND VINEGARS BE STORED?

To preserve flavor profiles, Brightland vinegars are best stored within your refrigerator.

That said, if you are interested in the health benefits of The Mother, this process will be slowed by colder temperatures and you may consider storing your vinegars on a kitchen shelf instead.

WHERE ARE BRIGHTLAND'S VINEGARS MADE?

100% USA made: Brightland’s fruit-forward vinegars are made on a nutrient-dense, family-run farm in California’s Central Coast.

ARE THE VINEGARS ORGANIC?

Our farm partner is committed to organic practices and uses zero pesticides. Their small, family-run farm is not certified organic due to the onerous and costly certification process to meet USDA standards, however, this is something we are working toward as Brightland grows.

ARE BRIGHTLAND VINEGARS VEGAN OR GLUTEN FREE?

All of Brightland's vinegars are 100% plant based, vegan, gluten free, and cruelty-free.

WHAT TYPE OF FRUIT IS USED IN THE VINEGARS?

PARASOL is made using a mix of Valencia and Navel oranges, and RAPTURE is made using Triple Crown Blackberries. These fruits are sourced fresh from a farm in California's Central Coast!

WHAT ARE THE TASTING NOTES FOR RAPTURE AND PARASOL?

RAPTURE is bold, berry, rich, and decadent. The Master Fermenter at our partner farm has created a fruit-forward flavor profile, with berry flavor in front and more of a wine finish.

We love RAPTURE with salads, marinades, mozzarella and tomato, crusty bread, BBQ, peaches and summer fruit. It also pairs beautifully with Brightland's AWAKE, ARDOR, ALIVE.

PARASOL is zingy, bright, and effervescent. The Master Fermenter at our partner farm has created a fruit-forward flavor profile, with citrus in the front and champagne zing on the backside!

We love PARASOL with salads, greens, chicken, seafood, cocktails and shrubs. It also pairs beautifully with Brightland’s ALIVE, LUCID, and ARISE.

WHY IS SUGAR ADDED TO THE VINEGARS?

We add cane sugar to our vinegars to round off the sharpness of the taste. Our family-run partner farm has tested many different types of sweeteners and discovered that cane sugar provides the best flavor profile to bring the fruit flavor forward!

WHAT IS A CALIFORNIA BALSAMIC?

Though many store-bought balsamics are falsely represented as such, true balsamics are from Modena, Italy and barrel aged for 12 years.

We distinguish from this process by calling our balsamics “California Balsamics” in reference to the difference in the production and fermentation processes used. We use a zin grape and stainless steel barrels, in comparison to traditional Italian Balsamic-making methods, and do not follow the 12 year aging process.

ARE THE VINEGAR BOTTLES RECYCLABLE?

Yes! Our Vinegar bottles are recyclable.

Honey Details

HOW SHOULD BRIGHTLAND HONEY BE STORED?

The honey should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight.

WHEN DOES MY HONEY EXPIRE?

So long as your honey jar remains tightly sealed, it will not expire, thanks to pure honey’s unique pH and chemical properties. However, real honey, like Brightland’s honey, can crystallize or darken over time. If this happens, no worries- it is still delicious and safe to eat!

ARE THE HONEYS VEGAN/VEGETARIAN AND GLUTEN-FREE?

As an animal by-product, honey is not considered vegan. Our honey is vegetarian and gluten-free.

IS BRIGHTLAND HONEY CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey employ sustainable practices in caring for the land and the hives. The bees are not given antibiotics and our beekeepers utilize natural and non-toxic approaches to controlling pests and disease. Pesticides are never used on forage during honey production and our Kauai hives pollinate exclusively wild flora and fauna! The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey are not certified organic, however, due to the onerous regulations and hefty processing fees involved.

WHAT ARE THE TASTING NOTES OF THE CALIFORNIA ORANGE BLOSSOM HONEY AND THE KAUAI WILDFLOWER HONEY?

Our California Orange Blossom Honey is radiantly golden, made from single estate orange groves in the Central Valley of California. The tasting notes are intensely floral and citrus with a clean finish.

Our Kauai Wildflower Honey is deeply amber hued with a molasses-like finish and tasting notes of caramel, chocolate, and cooked fruit. The honey is made from wild Hawaian sources including hibiscus, eucalyptus, coffee tree, papaya trees, passion flowers, and guava flowers.

WHERE IS BRIGHTLAND HONEY MADE?

Brightland honey is made by 4th generation US-based beekeeping families run by women-led teams who have dedicated their lives to the art of the hive.

Brightland’s California Orange Blossom Honey hails from single estate orange groves in the Central Valley of California. Brightland’s Kauai Wildflower Honey is made from wild Hawaiian sources including hibiscus, eucalyptus, coffee tree, papaya trees, passion flowers, and guava flowers all located on the island of Kauai.

MY HONEY TEXTURE HAS CHANGED. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Raw, unfiltered and unadulterated honey can crystallize over time, meaning it may become solid or change texture. This is due to the presence of pollen and other natural particulates. Crystallization is actually a positive indicator of authentic, unfiltered honey. Crystalized honey can be enjoyed as is, or you can re-liquify your honey by placing the closed jar in a container filled with warm water.

HOW DOES BRIGHTLAND PROTECT BEE POPULATIONS?

Brightland honey comes from apiaries that prioritize the health of hives through sustainable beekeeping that focuses on nurturing bee colonies. By supporting Brightland you are helping support 4th generation beekeeping families in their commitment to protect endangered bee populations!

CAN BABIES BE GIVEN BRIGHTLAND HONEY?

The FDA advises that honey should not be given to infants younger than one year of age.

WHERE DID THE NAME BRIGHTLAND COME FROM?

From a song called The Olive Tree by The Seekers:

I've heard them say a greener land is waiting there

Where people wake and find their dreams come true

High flying dove please lead me and I'll follow you

Above the clouds beyond the stormy sea

I long to share a world of sweet contentment there

In that bright land where grows the olive tree
