I feel a sharp, peppery sensation at the back of my throat after I swallow the Brightland oil – what does this mean?
A sharp, peppery sensation at the back of your throat is one of the best indications of a high polyphenol olive oil, which is the chemical compound most commonly known as an antioxidant. The polyphenols in olive oil that contribute to its pepperiness also prevent oxidation. These polyphenols are strong antioxidants and have been shown to provide a host of beneficial effects from healing sunburn to lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk of coronary disease. Additionally, oleocanthal, a natural polyphenolic anti-inflammatory agent uniquely found in extra virgin olive oil, functions much the same way that ibuprofen, an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) does. This receptor is located at the back of the throat, which is where the distinctive sting from high quality olive oil is felt. This unique sensation and the accompanying cough or clearing of the throat are regarded among connoisseurs as indicators of high quality olive oil.
My olive oil tastes bitter. What does this mean?
Bitterness is actually a positive term in the authentic extra virgin olive oil world. A bitter taste indicates that the olives were harvested in the early Fall, making the oil bitter and grassy tasting.
Where is Brightland extra virgin olive oil produced?

Are the white bottles recyclable?
The UV-protected, coated bottles are recyclable! They are environmentally friendly and virtually pollution-free. Unlike typical liquid paints, the UV-protected coating process doesn't use solvents and doesn't release organic compounds into the atmosphere. You can recycle our bottles with certainty that they are not damaging the environment.
You can also upcycle your bottles; some Brightland customers reuse their bottles with flowers, candles, branches and stems, as beautiful shelf art, and when storing leftover cocktails or aperitifs!

What is a California balsamic?
Though many store-bought balsamics are falsely represented as such, true balsamics are from Modena, Italy and barrel aged for 12 years.
We distinguish from this process by calling our balsamics “California Balsamics” in reference to the difference in the production and fermentation processes used. We use a zin grape and stainless steel barrels, in comparison to traditional Italian Balsamic-making methods, and do not follow the 12 year aging process.
Are the vinegar bottles recyclable?
Yes! Our Vinegar bottles are recyclable.
Honey Details
How should Brightland honey be stored?
The honey should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight.
When does my honey expire?
So long as your honey jar remains tightly sealed, it will not expire, thanks to pure honey’s unique pH and chemical properties. However, real honey, like Brightland’s honey, can crystallize or darken over time. If this happens, no worries- it is still delicious and safe to eat!
Are the honeys vegan?
Honey is not vegan, as it’s an animal by-product.
Is Brightland honey certified organic?
The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey employ sustainable practices in caring for the land and the hives. The bees are not given antibiotics and our beekeepers utilize natural and non-toxic approaches to controlling pests and disease. Pesticides are never used on forage during honey production and our Kauai hives pollinate exclusively wild flora and fauna! The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey are not certified organic, however, due to the onerous regulations and hefty processing fees involved.

Where did the name Brightland come from?
From a song called The Olive Tree by The Seekers:
I've heard them say a greener land is waiting there
Where people wake and find their dreams come true
High flying dove please lead me and I'll follow you
Above the clouds beyond the stormy sea
I long to share a world of sweet contentment there
In that bright land where grows the olive tree
