MY OIL DIDN’T ARRIVE WHEN IT SAID IT WOULD...WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Once your package leaves Brightland’s warehouse/fulfillment center until it is delivered to your address, shipping liabilities are with FedEx and UPS. We highly recommend adding Route+ package protection insurance at the time you purchase Brightland products, to allow you to file a claim in the unfortunate event your package is damaged, lost or stolen while in transit. When you file a claim, ensure you have your Order Number or Route Order ID ready to use with the claim form. It will be reviewed for approval by a Route+ team member for a reorder or refund within 24 hours.  Missing package claims must be filed directly to Route by the customer.

If you do not elect to add Route+, once the package is marked delivered by FedEx or UPS, packages become the customer’s responsibility, and Brightland is not responsible for missing packages. Missing package claims must be filed by the customer.  You may file a missing package claim with FedEx here.

WHAT IF MY PRODUCT GETS LOST?

We have been there, and it is the worst. That is why we highly recommend adding Route+ package protection insurance to allow you to file a claim in the unfortunate event your package is damaged, lost, or stolen while in transit. If an order is not insured with Route+, Brightland is not responsible for items that have shipped out on our end but have not been received by the customer.

What is Route+?

Route+ is a premium package protection insurance for online orders. When you add Route+ at checkout, you can easily file claims for lost, stolen or damaged packages in the unfortunate case that they arise.

Route’s terms and conditions are listed here: https://route.com/terms-and-conditions/

My city's temperatures regularly get above 85 degrees.
Will this affect my oil?

We try to mitigate this issue as much as possible on our end, by shipping most orders so that they arrive in 1-5 business days. However, there is always a bit of a risk in extreme temperatures, so we would recommend selecting FedEx Overnight, 1 Business Day Shipping when you checkout as an option, to be safe! We also recommend bringing your delivered package inside immediately or having it delivered to an office location where it will be left indoors. That way, your order will not sit out in the heat once it is delivered.

FedEx Overnight is not offered to Alaskan and Hawaiian addresses.  If your order needs to ship in 1 business day to Alaska or Hawaii, please email goodday@brightland.co, and we can assist you. Please note that our customer service is available 9am - 5pm EST Monday - Friday.

Olive Oil Details

I FEEL A SHARP, PEPPERY SENSATION AT THE BACK OF MY THROAT AFTER I SWALLOW THE BRIGHTLAND OIL - WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

That sharp, peppery sensation at the back of your throat is one of the best indications of Brightland’s commitment to quality, and the  high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory value in its oils. Additionally, the polyphenols in olive oil that contribute to a sharp taste and resistance to oxidation. These polyphenols are strong antioxidants and have been shown to provide a host of beneficial effects from healing sunburn to lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk of coronary disease. Additionally, oleocanthal, a natural polyphenolic anti-inflammatory agent uniquely found in extra virgin olive oil, functions much the same way that ibuprofen, an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) does. This receptor is spatially located at the back of the throat, which is exactly where the distinctive sting from high quality olive oil is felt. This unique sensation and the accompanying cough or clearing of the throat are regarded among connoisseurs as indicators of high quality olive oil.

MY OLIVE OIL TASTES BITTER/PUNGENT! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Bitterness and pungency are actually positive terms in the authentic extra virgin olive oil world! A bitter/sharp taste generally indicates that the olives were harvested early, making the oil extra green + grassy tasting. The sharp taste at the back of your throat that you might feel is an indicator of the high polyphenol count of the oil, which we address fully in the question below!

ARE BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OILS VEGAN?

All of Brightland’s olive oils are 100%  plant-based, vegan, gluten free and cruelty-free.

IS BRIGHTLAND CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

Our farm partner is committed to organic practices and uses zero pesticides. Their small, family-run farm and mill is not certified organic due to the onerous and costly certification process, however, this is something we are working toward as Brightland grows.

WHERE IS BRIGHTLAND EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL PRODUCED?

100% USA made: Brightland olive oil comes from the golden state of California in the Central Coast.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY BRIGHTLAND BOTTLES?

All Brightland bottles are coated with UV-protectant matte coating, so you can keep your bottle on your kitchen counter or at your table and don’t have to hide it away in a cupboard. We highly recommend closing the top when you’re not using the oil.

WHAT IS THE SMOKE POINT FOR BRIGHTLAND EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL?

Both Brightland extra virgin olive oils’ smoke points are 410 degrees at the time of harvest (November 2020).  There is a common misconception that extra virgin olive oil has a low smoke point - however, high quality extra virgin olive oil can have a smoke point up to 420 degrees, which is more than enough when cooking with EVOO.  One important thing to remember is that change will occur with time: all extra virgin olive oil begins to degrade, and so the smoke point will begin to lower gradually over time.

Using the Olive Oil

HOW SHOULD I USE BRIGHTLAND AWAKE VS. BRIGHTLAND ALIVE IN MY KITCHEN?

AWAKE: For cozy days and slow nights. When you’re feeling like making some soups, pastas, a hearty stew, want to roast some meat, fish or veggies, we recommend using AWAKE.
ALIVE:  For verve and vibrancy.  When you’re in the mood for a salad, want to whip together a dressing or marinade, or want to sautee greens like kale or spinach, we recommend ALIVE.

ARE BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OILS A COOKING OIL OR A FINISHING OIL?

Both! Brightland can be used when cooking or even when frying an egg because of its high smoke point. It also serves as a beautiful finishing oil because of its early harvest, green properties. Scroll through our Brightland recipes here! Or visit our Pinterest page for more Brightland inspiration.

ARE THE WHITE BOTTLES RECYCLABLE?

The UV-protected coated bottles are recyclable. Our UV-protected coated bottles are environmentally friendly and virtually pollution-free. Unlike typical liquid paints, the UV-protected coating process doesn't use solvents and doesn't release organic compounds into the atmosphere. You can recycle our bottles with certainty that they are not damaging the environment.

You can also upcycle your bottles; Brightland customers reuse their bottles with flowers, candles, branches and stems, as beautiful shelf art, and when storing leftover cocktails or aperitifs.

HOW CAN I USE BRIGHTLAND IN MY BEAUTY/WELLNESS ROUTINE?

There are a number of wonderful beauty and wellness use cases for Brightland that our customers have shared with us, including: take eye makeup off, moisturize legs and arms, clean makeup brushes, heal chapped lips, fix ragged cuticles, get a smooth shave.

HOW LONG DOES BRIGHTLAND OLIVE OIL LAST?

If stored properly, Brightland is best if used within 4-6 months after opening.

WHEN DOES MY OLIVE OIL EXPIRE?

If your harvest year on your Brightland bottle is November 2020: Best By: June 2022

We also generally recommend that once you open your Brightland bottle you use it within 4-6 months.

WHAT TYPE OF FRUIT IS USED IN THE VINEGARS?

PARASOL is made using a mix of Valencia and Navel oranges, and RAPTURE is made using Triple Crown Blackberries. These fruits are sourced fresh from a farm in California's Central Coast!

WHAT ARE THE TASTING NOTES FOR RAPTURE AND PARASOL?

RAPTURE is bold, berry, rich, and decadent. The Master Fermenter at our partner farm has created a fruit-forward flavor profile, with berry flavor in front and more of a wine finish.

We love RAPTURE with salads, marinades, mozzarella and tomato, crusty bread, BBQ, peaches and summer fruit. It also pairs beautifully with Brightland's AWAKE, ARDOR, ALIVE.

PARASOL is zingy, bright, and effervescent. The Master Fermenter at our partner farm has created a fruit-forward flavor profile, with citrus in the front and champagne zing on the backside!

We love PARASOL with salads, greens, chicken, seafood, cocktails and shrubs. It also pairs beautifully with Brightland’s ALIVE, LUCID, and ARISE.

WHERE ARE BRIGHTLAND'S VINEGARS MADE?

100% USA made: Brightland’s fruit-forward vinegars are made on a nutrient-dense, family-run farm in California’s Central Coast.

HOW SHOULD BRIGHTLAND VINEGARS BE STORED?

To preserve flavor profiles, Brightland vinegars are best stored within your refrigerator.

That said, if you are interested in the health benefits of The Mother, this process will be slowed by colder temperatures and you may consider storing your vinegars on a kitchen shelf instead.

WHY IS SUGAR ADDED TO THE VINEGARS?

We add organic cane sugar to our Brightland vinegars to round off the sharpness of the taste. Our family-run partner farm has tested many different types of sweeteners and discovered that organic cane sugar provides the best flavor profile to bring the fruit flavor forward.

ARE THE VINEGARS ORGANIC?

Our farm partner is committed to organic practices and uses zero pesticides. Their small, family-run farm is not certified organic due to the onerous and costly certification process to meet USDA standards, however, this is something we are working toward as Brightland grows.

ARE BRIGHTLAND VINEGARS VEGAN OR GLUTEN FREE?

All of Brightland's vinegars are 100% plant based, vegan, gluten free, and cruelty-free.

WHAT IS A CALIFORNIA BALSAMIC?

Though many store-bought balsamics are falsely represented as such, true balsamics are from Modena, Italy and barrel aged for 12 years.

We distinguish from this process by calling our balsamics “California Balsamics” in reference to the difference in the production and fermentation processes used. We use a zin grape and stainless steel barrels, in comparison to traditional Italian Balsamic-making methods, and do not follow the 12 year aging process.

ARE THE VINEGAR BOTTLES RECYCLABLE?

Both PARASOL and RAPTURE come in completely recyclable bottles.

DO YOU OFFER VINEGAR AS PART OF THE SUBSCRIPTION?

Yes! When you start a Brightland subscription, we will start you off with The Duo at 15% off. After the first order, you'll be able to sign into the Subscriber Hub and add other Brightland products as either a one-time add-on to try, or a recurring subscription to stay stocked with your favorites.

Honey Details

What are the tasting notes of the California Orange Blossom Honey and the Kauai Wildflower Honey?

Our California Orange Blossom Honey is radiantly golden, made from single estate orange groves in the Central Valley of California. The tasting notes are intensely floral and citrus with a clean finish.

Our Kauai Wildflower Honey is deeply amber hued with a molasses-like finish and tasting notes of caramel, chocolate, and cooked fruit. The honey is made from wild Hawaian sources including hibiscus, eucalyptus, coffee tree, papaya trees, passion flowers, and guava flowers.

Where is Brightland honey made?

Brightland honey is made by 4th generation US-based beekeeping families run by women-led teams who have dedicated their lives to the art of the hive.

Brightland’s California Orange Blossom Honey hails from single estate orange groves in the Central Valley of California. Brightland’s Kauai Wildflower Honey is made from wild Hawaiian sources including hibiscus, eucalyptus, coffee tree, papaya trees, passion flowers, and guava flowers all located on the island of Kauai.

How should Brightland honey be stored?

The honey should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight.

When does my honey expire?

So long as your honey jar remains tightly sealed, it will not expire, thanks to pure honey’s unique pH and chemical properties. However, real honey, like Brightland’s honey, can crystallize or darken over time. If this happens, it is still delicious and safe to eat.

My honey texture has changed. What does that mean?

Raw, unfiltered and unadulterated honey can crystallize over time, meaning it may become solid or change texture. This is due to the presence of pollen and other natural particulates. Crystallization is actually a positive indicator of authentic, unfiltered honey. Crystalized honey can be enjoyed as is, or you can reliquify your honey by placing the closed jar in a container filled with warm water.

Are the honeys vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free?

As an animal by-product, honey is not considered vegan. Our honey is vegetarian and gluten-free.

Is Brightland honey certified organic?

The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey employ sustainable practices in caring for the land and the hives. The bees are not given antibiotics and our beekeepers utilize natural and non-toxic approaches to controlling pests and disease. Pesticides are never used on forage during honey production and our Kauai hives pollinate exclusively wild flora and fauna. The small, family-run apiaries that make Brightland honey are not certified organic, however, due to the onerous regulations and hefty processing fees involved.

How does Brightland protect bee populations?

Brightland honey comes from apiaries that prioritize the health of hives through sustainable beekeeping that focuses on nurturing bee colonies. By supporting Brightland you are helping support 4th generation beekeeping families in their commitment to protect endangered bee populations.

Can babies be given Brightland honey?

The FDA advises that honey should not be given to infants younger than one year of age.

Candle Details

How is the candle made?

Every candle is lovingly hand-poured in a small studio in California. DIGESTIF is made with a blend of all-natural California-grown soy wax, Brightland olive oil, neroli, vetiver, and black pepper essential oils.

Brightland olive oil helps to extend its lifespan and improve its scent throw. Brightland olive oil protects the fragrant essential oils from heat damage, keeps them from burning off right away, and adds its own herbaceous goodness to the candle's scent.

Is the candle non-toxic and vegan?

Yes, our 100% natural soy candles are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic dyes. The cotton wick is unbleached. The candle is 100% vegan and never tested on animals.

How do I burn my candle safely?

Trim the wick to a ¼ inch height before lighting the candle. Keep the candle free of any foreign objects. Only burn the candle on a level, fire-resistant surface. For the first burn, allow the entire top layer of wax to melt to prevent tunneling. Do not burn for more than 4 hours.

To prevent fire, always burn the candle in sight, keep the candle away from things that can catch fire, and keep the candle out of reach of children and pets. The vessel will be hot when the candle is lit and shortly after. Allow the candle to cool completely before moving.

How long does the candle burn?

The burn time is approximately 40 hours.

How do I care for my candle?

Upon the first burn, ensure that the entire top layer of wax is liquefied to prevent the wax from tunneling and allow the candle to melt evenly. The wick should be kept at ⅛ inch in height to avoid smoke and ash.

Once the candle has completely melted, the vessel can be recycled with other glass products or kept in your home as a pinch bowl, ring holder, single flower vase, or water dish for your paintbrushes.
